10/30/2002 - SIRTI Offers Video Conferencing

In todayís travel climate, business travelers are looking for alternatives to expensive tickets, long lines at the airport, and numerous delays. There is still a need for face-to-face communication, where one can read body language, and for spontaneous give-and-take. Video conferencing is being used to solve both problems. It can be cost and time effective, especially for groups, and thanks to state-of-the-art technology, satisfactory in terms of human interaction.

SIRTI now has video conferencing capability to connect to any global destination with equivalent local video technology, and it is available for use to businesses in need. Their technology includes Polycom FX units, Polycom Visual Concert, and ISDN lines. IP is available for those without partnering ISDN lines. SIRTI facilities can accommodate from 2 to 60 people, and one or two camera video-conferencing, connection speeds up to 384 KB, projection by two 53-inch TVís, LCD projection, a document camera, and video and audio recording.

The system uses six ISDN telephone lines to carry the video signal; two screens work in concert so that both the presenter and the audience can be viewed. The document camera transmits still images, while the Polycom Visual Concert shares computer applications. Although the technology is complicated, the system is extremely easy to use. It is no more difficult than using a TV remote.

Because the success of video conferencing is in the details, the SIRTI staff has put together a sheet of tips for achieving the best possible experience. The tips include suggestions for presentation, what to wear, how to create visual aids, working with the live camera, and working with the document camera.
