07/31/2009 - Triangle Welcomes Whitworth University

When school begins on August 18, Whitworth University will offer classes in downtown Spokane for the first time. Whitworth has leased space in the Sirti Building on the Riverpoint Campus where they will have administrative offices, a student lounge area, and classroom space. This expands the "Whitworth in the Evening" program. The purpose of Whitworth's expansion is to make it more convenient for working adults to have access to educational opportunities 'especially to Whitworth's accelerated-format degree program in organizational management. Along with the organizational management program, Whitworth will also offer general courses.

The Organizational Management program is designed specifically for adults over 25 years old. It is an accelerated-format program that leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management degree. Those who enroll want a business-based management degree based on both theory and practice. The degree program is in a "cohort" format. This means that a small group of no more than 20 students will begin the program together, and stay together as they take each course in sequence. This format aims to develop a strong sense of community and collaboration among the students. All classes leading to the BA will be offered at the Riverpoint Campus location as well as on the Whitworth University campus.

In the accelerated-format, each class lasts six weeks and is taught only in the evening. Along with being over 25 years old, anyone interested in the Organizational Management program must meet with an advisor, submit any transcripts from previously attended institutions, and demonstrate college-level writing competence. Tuition includes books and Whitworth sponsored parking. The Sirti Building is at 665 N Riverpoint Boulevard; Whitworth occupies Suite 202.

With this expansion, Whitworth joins Community Colleges of Spokane, Eastern Washington University Spokane, Sirti, University of Washington, and Washington State University Spokane, which all have presences on the Riverpoint Campus. Along with Gonzaga, the University District now has five universities represented.
