01/30/2009 - FlySight Appliance Boosts Internet Marketing

Marketing on the Internet has the potential of reaching millions of potential buyers. Yet effective means of reaching those buyers is still basically trial and error. FlySight LLC has developed an Internet appliance that could revolutionize Internet marketing. An “Internet appliance” is a physical device that plugs into the Internet much as your toaster plugs into the electrical source. In this case, it is a bit more like your satellite dish than your toaster, but no more difficult than that, according to Jim Burke, EE system developer along with Dan Stutzke, RCDD.

FlySight’s Digital Marketing Tool (DMT) – an Internet appliance – consists of a high-resolution video system, audio, and all of the hardware and software to make it all work over the Internet. The camera is a pan, tilt, zoom, color camera with very high resolution. It is the same camera used in FlySight’s surveillance installations, which produce images far superior to the ones generally seen on newscasts or television crime shows. People and objects are clearly identifiable. The DMT includes a microphone, but the inclusion of audio is optional.

Along with the camera and audio, the DMT comes with full frame rate in all resolutions. It includes a fanless mini PC, mobile processors, built in LAN, USB 2.0, 2394a Firewire, and routers. The hardware components are housed in a special cabinet. The DMT allows all video scenes to be easily set with minimal effort – no programming experience is necessary. All the user really needs is broadband. The appliance does need to be professionally installed, but once in place, it will require almost no maintenance, according to Burke.

As a marketing tool, the appliance sends, in real time, video of commercial quality consisting of images and sound that can be used to showcase a number of different products at the place of purchase. The pan, tilt, zoom camera can show panorama views or close ups of any item of merchandise from all perspectives, while the audio can carry a full description of the item – all in real time.

At the local Web site level, the HTML code can easily be manipulated to include still images or graphics such as coupons. In these times of belt tightening, coupons will become a greater money stretching aid, and are an effective way of measuring the success of a marketing effort. Surveys found in Brandweek, Business Wire, and Media Post News have shown that 72% of coupon users are logging on to the Internet in search of coupons; while 87% of consumers said they are more likely to shop at retailers that offer coupons. Another 58% believe companies that offer on-line coupons care about keeping them as customers. FlySight’s DMT makes coupons easier to create and post, while enticing the customer with full color, high resolution images of the products for sale.

FlySight’s DMT has been fully tested for both indoor and outdoor use. One unit has been “flying over Millwood” for nearly a year. The camera and microphone have operated continuously and without maintenance through the hottest and coldest parts of the year – and through our recent titanic snowfall. As a further test of the system, a FlySight unit was used to determine the degree of difficulty for entering a transportation tunnel damaged by an avalanche. The tunnel needed to be cleared as quickly as possible, but workers couldn’t go in without first assessing the damage and determining the possibility of a cave-in that could prove fatal. FlySight principals Dan Stutzke, and Jim Burke, used the DMT system to create a “snake cam” – a high-resolution camera on a very long cable linked to portable hardware modeled after the DMT cabinet.

The avalanche assessment crew carried the portable DMT into the snowbound area. They traveled by snowshoe to the ridge above the avalanche site where they set up a tent, a small generator, and the receiving computer. From there, one assessor rappelled down to the top of the tunnel and dropped the “snake cam” through ventilation holes into tunnel. The camera transmitted its images to the controls at the top of the ridge; where they were recorded so that a real-time and immediate decision could be made as to the safety of entering the tunnel to perform excavation work.
