02/29/2008 - INMUG Premiere Packs Premises

A capacity crowd packed the Sirti Boardroom for the INMUG meeting last Monday night. INMUG is the Inland Northwest Multimedia Users Group -- an official Adobe Users Group, focusing on products made by Adobe. The occasion was the launch of AIR and Flex 3; Adobe's platform tools and technologies for building RIAs (Rich Internet Applications). The software became available at midnight, Eastern Standard Time, on February 25, and INMUG was allowed to present this leading edge technology immediately because Sean Drexler, INMUG manager, is an official Adobe tester. As such, he is given preferential treatment.

INMUG’s purpose is to bring together both academic and professional individuals for learning new concepts as well as sharing ideas for building "Great Experiences". The regular membership falls more into the “academic” sector. It is popular with students, and the average age is fairly young. An informal, non-scientific poll indicated that people attended equally for knowledge and class credit – but pizza was definitely an important factor. (Adobe contributed the pizza.)

INMUG members cover all aspects of multimedia. There are photographers and videographers; Web enthusiasts; artists, designers and illustrators; and sound and audio people. There is also a large contingent of “code monkeys.” The INMUG managers hope to encourage more industry people to attend -- if only to get better feeling for the large and diverse pool of talent and knowledge available.

In addition to regular monthly meetings, INMUG and Adobe host a “party” twice per year. In addition to food, Adobe contributes software worth up to $2100 for a drawing. Each person in attendance receives at least one raffle ticket, but those who attend regularly receive one ticket for each time they have attended in the previous months. This means that regular attendees have a better chance of winning.

About AIR: it delivers rich applications on the desktop, enabling access to the local file system, system tray, notifications and much more. It allows writing of RIA’s on the desktop using the same skills used to create great web applications -- including both Flex and AJAX. AIR is for desktop experiences that are universal across operating systems. It can be used on a Mac, with Windows, and will soon be available for Linux. The user can build rich interfaces for any back end; .NET, php, etc.

Flex is an open source framework for building and maintaining expressive Web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems. Adobe Flex™ Builder™ 3 accelerates Flex application development. It is an Eclipse™ based development tool enabling intelligent coding, interactive step-through debugging, and visual design of user interface layout, appearance, and behavior of rich Internet applications. Flex Builder 3 includes the complete Flex framework including compilers, component library and debuggers.
