SITSA Presents "Endless Data Streams and Queries -- Current Research"
Tuesday, November 13, 2007 5:30 pm. Presented by Dr. Peter A. Tucker, associate professor at Whitworth University. As most data arriving from non-terminating streams are structured, it seems logical to want to use data management techniques to process that data. However, two kinds of relational query operators are inappropriate for such inputs. First, blocking operators such as group-by must wait until the entire input has been read before producing a result. Second, unbounded stateful operators such as join accumulate state as data arrive, using up the finite resources of the system. Many systems and strategies have been proposed to combat those issues, including relying on ordered data, applying windows to the inputs, and exploiting punctuation semantics. A punctuation is an item embedded into the stream that marks the end of some subset of data. Punctuations have been shown to help unblock blocking operators and reduce required state for unbounded stateful operators. This talk will give an overview of punctuations and punctuation semantics. Sirti, room 310 on 3rd floor. 5:30 pm socializing and cookies, 6 to 7 pm, talk. Free.
