03/31/2007 - Triangle Welcomes Parsons/Burnett

The Fernwell Building Executive Suites has added Parsons/Burnett, LLP, Attorneys at Law as their newest tenant. Parsons/Burnett is a newly formed law firm, with two partners and a paralegal, in three different cities – Spokane, Bellevue, and Vancouver, Washington. Because of the somewhat “virtual” nature of their firm, they need a lot of bandwidth and reliable connectivity. Robert Burnett, the Spokane-based partner, found everything he could possibly need at the Fernwell Building, 505 W Riverside Avenue.

Not only is the Fernwell building a ‘plug and go’ building with five different connectivity providers, the Executive Suites provide all the business services. There is a receptionist who answers the telephone, a conference room, copy and other business machines, and a conference room – not to mention a great view of Riverfront Park. “I don’t have to worry about staff. Holding it all together and doing a terrific job is Allyson Shoshana,” says Burnett.

Parsons/Burnett is business and business owner centered law firm. Their expertise includes corporate work (especially creating business entities), franchising, mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings and estate planning. A large portion of their practice is in securities – with publicly traded companies and with small corporations that want to go public. Parsons/Burnett does the legal work for the initial public offering (IPO) and then continues business legal services for the company as needed. According to partner Jim Parsons, “There are new regulations for taking a company public, and a lot more work is needed. The preparation of the disclosure documents has to be done correctly according to the law, or if there is a dispute, the ramifications could be costly.”

Parsons/Burnett has an extensive securities practice. They guide public companies whose business interests are all over the world.. Their clients cover a broad cross section including mining, technology, biotech and software companies. “Thanks to the Internet,” says Parsons, “data and information can be accessed from anywhere in the world. ” There are new regulations allowing companies to do proxy work via the Internet which will reduce, if not eliminate, the need to send so many paper documents.

Although both Parsons and Burnett are well established attorneys, Parsons/Burnett formed in January 2007. Both partners grew up in Spokane but had lived on the West side of the state following law school. “I really wanted to come home,” says Burnett, “and forming the new firm made a simple, efficient way to make it happen. Not only is it a quality-of-life issue, the business and economic climate here has accelerated. Professionally, Spokane is very attractive.”

According to Burnett, “We’re competent and sophisticated enough to do a lot of different things under the business law umbrella, but we’re small and flexible enough to be responsive and give personal attention to our clients.” Parsons adds, “I think the Spokane market is prime for explosive growth in the corporate area. Many companies are ready to grow. We have many of the same resources larger firms have, but can do the same work for a lower cost because we have lower overhead. Small firms are no longer at a disadvantage.”
