SITSA -- Spokane IT SIG Alliance
Tuesday, December 12, Socializing: 5:30 pm; Presentation: 6:00 pm. SITSA Presents “Harnessing Increasing Network Bandwidth” presented by Patricia Crowley, Ph.D. "Networks are becoming faster and faster. As we reach network speeds of 10Gb/s, we are unable to harness this bandwidth. The largest impediment to using high-speed networks is the interrupt pressure associated with Ethernet-sized frames and the subsequent CPU pressure on the receiving computer as the receiver spends its CPU time processing interrupts. We offloaded IP fragmentation and reassembly onto an intelligent network interface card in order to relieve interrupt pressures on the CPU without having to change the size of the Ethernet frame. We were able to maintain bandwidth of 993 Mb/s and decrease CPU utilization on the receiving computer by over 50% without any changes in the network infrastructure or in the operating system."

Patricia Crowley is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Gonzaga University. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of New Mexico. Sirti Board Room, Room 432, 4th floor, 665 N Riverpoint Blvd., Spokane, Washington. Free.
