03/31/2006 - Sponsor Explosion Powers GameFest Spokane

Excitement is building for the inaugural GameFest Spokane as new sponsors add new game dimensions and prizes. Game opportunities exist for gamers of all levels of play with tournaments for both teams and individuals. Halo 2 teams will get to match their skills against the winner of the Halo 2 tournament held last weekend at the Spokane Valley Mall. All entrants will receive a T-shirt, but the real fun will be in the play. Register, right now, before April 1, and the cost of attendance is only $25. The first 200 people to register, and pay, will receive an Olympus Entertainment GMOD for the game Doom 3 -- which is a $30 value. Register at

GameFest Spokane will be Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 with registration beginning at 7:30 am and the program beginning at 9:00 am. Awards will be given at noon on Saturday to end the event. In addition to the games, computer game publishers, hardware manufacturers and consumer electronics companies will demonstrate their latest innovations, while GameFest participants will enjoy meeting and networking with gamers from across the region. There will be a GameFest Career Fair. There are many speakers and events to interest those who do not want to play games. GameFest is at the Spokane Convention Center at 334 W Spokane Falls Boulevard.

A Classic Arcade Game tournament has been added – sponsored by Bumpers Fun Centers, Inc. from the Northtown Mall. Bumpers will bring the arcade games that will be used in GameFest. GameFest will host the finals of a two week tournament starting at Bumpers on April 1 and lasting until April 13. Contact Bumpers for information, (509) 489-4000.

The US Army will host a tournament within a tournament. Theirs is the original War Game, and they will host eight tables for open play. The winner of this tournament will receive a Tony Hawk skateboard.

Other prizes will include such things as the Xbox accessories used during GameFest, a computer gaming chair from Trendz, and a coupon for a slice of David’s Pizza. The David’s Pizza truck will be parked “across the street” from 3:00 to 6:00 on Friday.

In other play, there will be:
6-seat Halo 2: Xbox competitive tournament, Rated M (Mature)
Multi-seat Playstation 2 -- Games Available - Madden, March Madness and MVP, Rated E (Everyone)
32-seat PC tournament zone (computers provided) -- Games Available - Unreal 2004, Half-Life 2 and CounterStrike, Rated M (Mature)
120-seat LAN Party (bring your own computer!) -- Games Supported: Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2: Special Forces, Unreal Tournament 2004 (MapMixer), Unreal Tournament 2004 (CarBall), Half-Life 2, CounterStrike: Source.
(To ensure the safety and security of the LAN Party, gamers must bring a surge suppressor, and have installed the most current version of games and up-to-date anti-virus software)

Those who bring their own computers for the LAN Party are invited to stay for an all night game playing tournament and party. For those planning to attend, there will be a mandatory briefing at 5:00 to go over the rules. Security will be strict. Attendees will not be allowed to come and go. Anyone who chooses to leave early will not be allowed to reenter. The party will last from the 5:00 briefing until 8:00 Saturday morning.

District 81 is donating the use of 32 brand new Gateway computers for the PC Tournament. A consortium of connectivity companies, along with VPnet, is teaming up to provide fiber bandwidth to support the gamers. Columbia Fiber and OneEighty Networks are providing a fiber link from the Convention Center to the US Bank building where VPnet will pick up the feed. This link will go to VPnet member Liberty Lake Internet Exchange (LLIX) who will host the server for both the PC Tournament and the LAN Party. The PC games will in turn be connected by broadband to a server in California which will transport some of the games in that portion of GameFest Spokane.
