11/30/2005 - Rings & Things Principals Visit Chinese Cyberspace

The penetration of the Internet into China was recently experienced by Rings & Things principals Russ Nobbs and Dee Muller while on a bead buying trip to China. They could confer as needed with the Spokane staff from nearly anywhere.

To illustrate, Nobbs writes, “It's early morning here in Guangzhou, mainland China, as I write and reply to my office. This Chinese hotel has a good Internet connection, and we have a riverside window overlooking the Pearl River. Mostly I connect using a Hotmail account since I can almost always get that, even if only from an Internet cafe in some place like rural Bali. However, with a fast connection in my room, as here in Guangzhou and earlier in Hong Kong, I can actually work at my own computer in Spokane over the Rings & Things VPN (virtual private network). With the digital camera, I can take a picture of proposed merchandise and send it to my staff for their input. With the time change, they can deal with things or answer question while we sleep. We have the results in the morning. Just thought you'd like to have an update ‘from the trenches,’ as it were.”
