11/30/2005 - Hogan Workshops Advance VPnet

The “Inland Northwest Digital University” exists. Thanks to VPnet and INHS’ video conferencing bridge services, students at Washington State University at Pullman and Whitworth College attended a workshop series with students from Eastern Washington University and Gonzaga University without ever leaving their own campuses. Of about thirty-five participating students, most were at GU’s Foley Center, but sixteen were at remote locations.

The workshops were part of the Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program’s 2006 business plan competition. There were three workshops covering basics, including writing a business plan, marketing research, and financial analysis. All were broadcast from GU to Whitworth and WSU Pullman using standard Polycom video conference equipment, INHS video conference bridge, and VPnet for transmission.

The distant students could see the presentation including PowerPoint slides, hear and see the explanations, and ask questions – all in real time. There was no obvious packet loss for either audio or visual. The audio was especially clear, and the visual from Pullman and Whitworth easily showed student body language and level of attention. The outgoing video was equally clear.

For those business plan participants that were unable to attend the workshop series, the sessions were video recorded and the content archived on Spokane Public Schools content server for on-demand viewing. The workshops can be downloaded as video files or seen as streaming video, thanks to VPnet partner, Spokane Public Schools, who is making their content archiving facility available for this project as well as for VPnet member use. The material is password protected, and available only to those with permission.

Rick Rasmussen, Gonzaga Information Technology, said, “this is the best quality video conference I have ever experienced. His colleague, Dale DeViveiros, said, “with a network like VPnet, it enables us to leverage video conferencing technologies in new ways for our institution.”
