10/31/2005 - SITSA Goes International

Dr. Ken’ichi Ohta will be the first international guest speaker ever for the Spokane Information Technology SIG Alliance (SITSA). At SITSA’s regular meeting on Tuesday, November 8, Dr. Ohta will present on “Image Processing and Kansei Information.” The occasion will also mark the permanent return of SITSA to the SIRTI building for its meetings.

Dr. Ohta, of Mukogawa Women's University in Spokane’s Sister City, Nishinomiya, Japan, represents a true confluence of cultures as well as technologies. ‘Kansei Information’ is a new concept for American scholars. Like the German word “gestalt” the Japanese word “kansei” had to be imported, because there is no exact English equivalent. Briefly, it refers to a viewpoint centered on the instinctive, subjective and heuristic aspects of human perception. ErgoSoft Laboratories of Austin, Texas, explains that “Kansei engineering is also sometimes referred to as ‘sensory engineering’ or ‘emotional usability’. This technique involves determining which sensory attributes elicit particular subjective responses from people, and then designing a product using the attributes which elicit the desired responses.”

Image processing, on the other hand, is familiar to anyone who has used Photoshop (or its many relatives) to modify a snapshot --- the use of computing power to modify an existing image, transforming it into another (altered) image. Image processing is able to accomplish many things, from ordinary image clipping and shading, to seemingly miraculous feats like transforming a hopelessly blurred photograph to one that is crystal clear.

Dr. Ohta, currently serving as an executive officer of the Japan Society for Kansei Engineering, and as chief editor of the International Journal of Kansei Engineering, will present his talk at 6:00 pm Tuesday November 8, in the SIRTI Board Room, 4th Floor. A social interlude with cookies will begin at 5:30 pm. Dr. Ohta is visiting Eastern Washington University’s department of computer science this fall.
