07/31/2005 - Riverpoint Campus Gets Connectivity Upgrade

Spokane’s Riverpoint Campus, the hub of Spokane’s University District, has begun a massive upgrade of its communications connectivity. The optical fiber based, campus wide upgrade will have a positive effect on the entire fledgling U-District, according to Larry Hoffman, WSU Spokane Director of Information Technology Services. “The whole campus needs the upgrade now – especially with the new Academic Center building nearing completion,” says Hoffman. “This upgrade will make it possible to recruit even more world-class research faculty members. Having highly recognized research faculty has resulted in our enrollments really taking off.”

The Riverpoint campus hosts WSU Spokane, SIRTI, Eastern Washington University -- and Community Colleges of Spokane has a point of presence. With the growth and development at Riverpoint, the campus has simply outgrown its communications plant. With the upgrade, connectivity will be easier to extend to new buildings as they come along, according to Hoffman. A new Network Operations Center (NOC) is a major part of the upgrade. Also planned is gigabit connectivity to every communications closet and between the main distribution facilities (MDF) of every building on campus. Illustrating the complexity of the upgrade, there are eleven closets in the Health Sciences building alone. This means there is the potential for gigabit connectivity to the desktop for any research faculty who needs it. The upgrade will also make possible high-speed connections to VPnet from every building on campus.

According to Hoffman, there are many benefits to the network upgrade, which he designed working with Ednetics, Inc. There will be network redundancy because the upgrade of the core and distribution layers will eliminate single points of failure. Network security will include 802.1x support across campus for network authentication. There will be protection of entity specific services and the ability to segment out certain types of traffic.

The campus network is managed by WSU Spokane’s IT Services Department. This simplifies the management of multiple entities on the same network. This also makes for a standard network design across campus, with a single management platform for network infrastructure. A single platform means that future connectivity can grow without significant redesign and new buildings can come on-line faster with less interruption of service. Advanced applications include Power over Ethernet (PoE) in each closet to support wireless, IPT, and IP video surveillance. Quality of service (QoS) support will be greatly improved.

The decision to move forward with campus network improvements positions WSU Spokane for increased collaboration with community partners, Eastern Washington University and other local colleges and universities, the City of Spokane, the GigaPop planning committee, and interested corporations. According to Hoffman, “The U-District is a community asset, and the community has really come together to make it grow and develop.”
