01/31/2002 - Business Plan Competition Attracts Students

Eighteen student teams have entered Gonzaga University’s second annual Business Plan Competition.  This is double the number of teams vying for the prize last year.  First prize in the competition is $10,000 and three to five finalists will receive $1,000 each.  Business ideas span the spectrum form technology-based ventures to niche retail ventures.  Completed plans are due April 8.

Students taking part in the business plan competition range from freshman to seniors to graduate students.  Most of the entrants are business majors, but there are also engineering students and arts and science students.  Two of the teams are made up of Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program students -- all freshmen.

The teams vary in size from a lone individual to five students working together.  Teams are all self-selected; the average size is three.  Although teams are encouraged to recruit members with complementary skills, faculty assigns no member to a team.   Some of the teams have individuals from different disciplines --- a mix of engineering, business, and arts and sciences.

Completed plans received on April 8 will be reviewed, then three to five finalists will be chosen and notified by April 19.  These finalists will give oral presentations of their plans on April 26.  Winners will be announced on May 3.
