06/30/2005 - SpokaneHotZonesm Unplugs Downtown

The SpokaneHotZonesm Interactive Caf?s grand opening in River Park Square was Thursday, June 23. The Caf? was designed by WhiteRunkle to be reminiscent of a European sidewalk caf? with a colorful awning and appropriate tables and chairs. The d?cor continues the sidewalk caf? theme with the names and logos of the technology alliance and marketing partners cleverly and unobtrusively woven into the background. Included in the Caf?s amenities are ready-to-use Itronix computers, but any computer configured for WiFi can be used in the caf?. The Caf? is on the third level in the Atrium Cafes between the theater ticket station and the Subway concession. Visitors can log in for free for up to two hours per day.

The design and construction of the project was accomplished through $50,000 worth of in-kind donations. The donors include: River Park Square, space and build out; Itronix, computers; OneEighty Networks, broadband connectivity; Vivato, wireless equipment; Purcell Systems, equipment housing; WhiteRunkle, design; Huppins, video equipment; Downtown Spokane Partnership, Spokane Area Economic Development Council, and Connect Northwest, marketing; and the City of Spokane. Thanks also go to Caf? neighbor Ben and Jerry?s Ice Cream for sponsorship of the reception.

Recent upgrades by OneEighty Networks, including a registration and sign-on process have enabled the capturing of statistics that measure the SpokaneHotZonesm project?s scope and success. In the current database there are 3,268 registered HotZone users. There are 1,353 registered users outside the 509 area code. There are at least 130 log-ins per day with weeknight usage twice daytime usage, and weekday usage twice that of weekends. Since March 2005, there have been 12,942 log-ins on the network. Overall average log-ins per user is eleven with the average for ?power users? (those logging on more than 30 times) is sixty-five.
The SpokaneHotZonesm is an outdoor wireless network available for free public Internet access for two hours per day. The SpokaneHotZonesm Interactive Caf? launch was in conjunction with the Downtown Spokane Business Improvement District?s ?Unplug Downtown? summer promotion. The promotion includes almost thirty-five outdoor wireless cafes in the SpokaneHotZonesm.
