05/15/2005 - VPnet Forum Celebrates Second Year

Spokane’s Virtual Possibilities Network (VPnet) is approaching its second anniversary. Its first year was devoted primarily to technical architecture and connecting the twelve founding member sites. Its second year focused on member’s projects and perfecting the running of a working, carrier class, high performance network.

VPnet’s projects will be the topic of the SITSA (Spokane Information Technology Special Interest Group Alliance) forum to be held on June 14, 5:30 pm in the Board Room at SIRTI, 665 N Riverpoint Boulevard. At this forum, Steve Trabun, VPnet President will give an overview, and project principals Craig Volosing, distributed music project, and Barbara and John Gale, CopyCat, will discuss their projects in depth. Steve Simmons, EWU CS will moderate.

Volosing will discuss the first attempt to have musicians in Spokane at SIRTI and on the EWU campus in Cheney play together in real time at a distance. He will outline the experiment, show video clips, and discuss the conclusions.

The Gales will discuss their entrepreneurial research project which combines Automatic Speech Recognition and collaborative text editing (captioning) with an economic model for employment for people with disabilities. They will relate their trials and successes in their first year of using VPnet to prove their concept.

Other current projects and applications being planned and implemented using VPnet include:
Gridstat – researchers are collaborating with private sector energy services organizations for the development of a middleware software framework for disseminating status information in the national electric power grid. (Partners, WSU, EWU, SIRTI)
INCEP - Virtual classroom environments that support classroom-to-classroom connectivity, enable remote student participation, incorporate digital whiteboards, and promote collaboration between institutions. (EWU)
Healthcare education applications between medical service providers and educators, including continuing education, remote surgical observations, IV therapy, and critical care. (INHS)
Whitworth College and Spokane Public Schools are utilizing web-based video and audio technology to conduct remote observations of teaching approaches and “best practices” (Whitworth, District 81)
Digital content archive of lectures, events, coursework, and more collected in a searchable web-based archive available across multiple education disciplines and institutions. (District 81)
LIFTS project – WSU, Spokane County and STA are leveraging GIS data to assist individuals on welfare-to-work programs with access to employment as well as transportation to job training
Video conferencing applications for collaborative efficiencies between VPnet members and partners.
