04/15/2005 - Eastern Washington Spotlighted at Washington Technology Summit

Eastern Washington’s Universities, economic development organizations, and energy and technology companies were highly visible participants in the first-ever Washington technology Summit presented April 8, in Seattle, by Seattle-based Washington Technology Center. This 400-person event helped make the entire state aware of the advances in technology and economic development being made in the Spokane area and the entire eastern side of Washington.

Spokane area presenters included Terabyte Triangle board members Kim Pearman-Gillman and Bill Kalivis. Pearman-Gillman moderated an Energy Track panel on Strategic Alliances, and Kalivis spoke on “Bringing your Ideas to the Marketplace.” Peter Mowery of SIRTI shared the Commercialization stage with Kalivis.

Eastern Washington University (EWU) was the title sponsor of the event, and a major player at the Summit. The EWU booth featured Terabyte Triangle company, GenPrime, and the Riverpoint Campus based Master of Science in Computer Science degree program. EWU network security professor, Dr. John Shovic, presented on Washington’s defense industries and profiled companies originating in the Terabyte Triangle that are active in defense. These companies include Toolbuilders Laboratories, and GenPrime.

Following Shovic’s presentation, EWU’s President Steve Jordan introduced the topic of VPnet. Discussion of the VPnet as a research tool for all of Eastern Washington followed. This discussion was the first time that many on the west side had learned of VPnet, and now they are aware of how this extraordinary new network has tied the region’s universities together for research, education, and incubation.

Washington Technology Center (WTC) is Washington’s statewide technology-based economic development organization. The WTC increases industry competitiveness through innovation, supports entrepreneurs, builds community capacity, and provides access to research, capital, and facilities.
