02/28/2005 - Terabyte Triangle Welcomes .NET Users Group

A users group for .NET developers has recently started in Spokane. The group’s focus is on software development using .NET related technologies. Mark Michaelis and Michael Stokesbary, both Itron employees, founded the group. According to Michaelis, “We started the group because we wanted to network with other .NET developers. I spend a significant amount of time speaking at conferences around the country, in cities where there is networking, and I was reflecting on the fact that we didn’t have a forum in Spokane where folks can learn .NET in-depth. Michael and I, along with a few others, started meeting outside of work to do some .NET development for fun. As part of this we thought it would be good if we could involve others in our discussions.”

The Spokane .NET users group (SNUG) meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Gonzaga University. The next meeting, March 9, in room 244 of Herak Hall from 6-9 PM, will feature Seth Auten from NextIT. Auten will provide an introduction to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI enables administrators to manage large networks, query and set information on desktop systems, applications, networks, and other enterprise components, and can even be used to monitor events that occur on remote machines. The main object categories are: user, network, system, software, and hardware. WMI can be accessed through a variety of programming languages including, but not limited to, VBScript, C++, C#, open database connectivity (ODBC), Visual Basic, and HTML. It provides a friendly query language, WQL, which is very similar to SQL.

SNUG is free. For more information, including directions check out the Web site at http://sug.dotnetprogramming.com.
