02/28/2005 - Time Warner Telecom Expands in Spokane

In a time of consolidation and centralization, with jobs being taken “off shore”, and questions for help being answered in India, the changes at Time Warner Telecom are nothing short of phenomenal. Time Warner re-partitioned its Northwest Region, Seattle/Spokane territory – making Spokane its own territory -- and has beefed up the Spokane office to provide fast, local service. They hired Tom Newbury as Vice President and General Manager of the new Spokane territory. Newbury is a Spokane native, a Gonzaga University alumnus, and although his career in telecommunications has taken him to various spots in the country, he and his family have always remained Spokane residents.

Time Warner Telecom’s Spokane headquarters are in the Washington Mutual building in the heart of the Terabyte Triangle. They are a provider of managed voice and data networks for businesses in Spokane and forty-three other metropolitan areas. In Spokane, they currently serve over 250 buildings, with 50 fiber enabled buildings. They very recently completed the expansion of their fiber optic network into the West Plains, extending their network as far as Fairchild Air Force base. This expansion brings their Spokane fiber optic network to a total of 150-route miles. According to Newbury, along with building market share, Time Warner plans to continue to build out their fiber optic network to serve new areas as opportunities arise. If a business case can be made, Time Warner will do the build out.

Time Warner is moving into Ethernet technology for their enterprise level business – away from more traditional circuit technology. Time Warner “offers the widest variety of intra and inter-city Ethernet services available in the industry,” according to industry analyst RHK, Inc. They are also a leader in network reach and breadth of Ethernet services. Time Warner offers a full suite of inter-city and multi-point Ethernet services that “combine the features of legacy technologies with the benefits of Ethernet,” says Newbury. Ethernet technology benefits include Quality of Service, scalability, and high bandwidth; and since it is a packet-based technology, it supports both voice and data over IP (Internet Protocol).

Time Warner has a robust portfolio of products. The VersiPak, just a year old, is especially designed for businesses that wish to utilize both voice and data over a single packet-based facility. Using the VersiPak, a company can combine its local voice lines, long distance service and Internet access into one package --- and because VersiPak is a 'smart' technology, when the voice lines are not used, data packets will automatically be carried over unused voice bandwidth, even within those small silences that take place in a normal telephone conversation. It is a dynamic system with the voice having priority, so that the voice lines are always answered. “Our customers love it,” says Newbury. “Internet speeds typically increase significantly, the “burstable” capability makes business communications much more efficient.”

Newbury likes a challenge, and he considers Time Warner a great opportunity. “We have some exciting projects in the works,” says Newbury, “and we won't forget that the customer comes first.”
