12/31/2004 - VPnet Interest Group to Launch in 2005

VPnet (Virtual Possibilities Network) was officially launched exactly two years ago, on January 1 2003, following the November 2002 announcement by Avista Corp and Columbia Fiber Solutions of a gift of 200 miles of fiber optic cable to serve as the foundation for a state-of-the-art collaborative network that would unite the regional universities, government organizations, and business organizations at gigabit speeds.

This January, with VPnet 100% up and running --- and OC-3 connections in place to Seattle, Pullman/Moscow and PNNL --- the focus has shifted to the growing world of VPnet content and applications. For this reason, Dr Steve Simmons, chair of the graduate program in computer science at EWU, has coordinated the launch of an informal new “users group” --- the VPnet Interest Group (VIG), to help provide working models, peer to peer advice, and even some casual technical advice for those interested in using the very powerful new network.

According to Simmons “There is a time when a user group, rather than governing type group, is needed to complement the official groups and accelerate progress for a very new venture. Long ago, some members of the IT community founded the Spokane Microcomputer User Group (SMUG) at that kind of moment. People really needed the kind of help and advice that comes from other users, as they venture into unknown territory. We hope VIG will be equally catalytic and useful.”

VIG has been welcomed as the most recent member of Spokane’s information technology organization of organizations --- SITSA --- the Spokane IT SIG Alliance (see: sitsa.org). As such, the newly born VIG will utilize the SITSA website and e-mail services to announce programs and meetings as they arise. The June SITSA meeting, on Tuesday June 14, 2005, will be devoted to a report on VPnet progress, sponsored by the new VIG organization. For more information on VIG, e-mail Dr Steve Simmons at ssimmons@ewu.edu.
