12/24/2001 - EWU’s Technology Initiative receives $1 million Launch

Eastern Washington University has received $1 million in startup funds for the university’s new School of Computing and Engineering Sciences. Funding for the EWU School of Computing and Engineering Sciences is included in the Departments of Labor, Health & Human Services Appropriations bill and was spearheaded by Rep. George Nethercutt. The federal appropriation announced the month was given for curriculum development in the area of cyber security.

This past year, Eastern restructured its departments of Technology, Computer Science and Physics into the new school to begin addressing the workforce and applied research needs of Washington’s increasingly technologically based economy. A new “Center for Cyber Security” with appropriate courses, laboratories, and newly created faculty positions is an integral part of plans for the new school.

EWU’s Computer Science department also teaches classes and maintains the Software Engineering Laboratory in the SIRTI Building on the Riverpoint Campus. Most of these classes are held in the evening to serve students who continue their educations while holding full time jobs in Spokane’s high technology industry. Laboratories and classes at the SIRTI building will interact with the new center for cyber security over exceptionally high speed Internet links that are also projected for the new school.
