09/30/2004 - TINCAN Receives $1.2 Million NSF Grant

The Inland Northwest Community Access Network (TINCAN) has received a grant of $1.2 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop and implement a curriculum integrating science and technology into the high school science curriculum. The three year project will provide training for teachers in environmental science and three progressively more complex technologies: GIS, modeling and simulation, and game development. "We chose environmental science," said Dr. Karen Michaelson, TINCAN's director, "because it encompasses multiple scientific disciplines taught at the secondary level, and because students tend to be interested in environmental subjects." The curriculum will be keyed to state and national science and technology standards. TINCAN is partnering with WSU Spokane, HeyCats! Web Solutions, and Spokanimation to produce the curriculum content.

Initially, the project will be implemented in rural schools, with teachers taking summer workshops, and having the opportunity to develop confidence in the materials by teaching it in after school science clubs before they integrate it into the science classroom. TINCAN has developed a reputation, both locally and nationally, for high quality secondary school curriculum integrating technology into a variety of subject matter. Michaelson notes that the NSF project "is built on what we have learned over the years that teachers want and need for successful classroom implementation".
