08/31/2004 - Chamber Presents: Think Big, Achieve More

The Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce theme for their annual meeting Thursday, September 23 is "Think Big, Achieve More." The annual meeting, which highlights technology, will follow the VPnet Ceremonial Launch at the Ag Trade Center, 334 W Spokane Falls Boulevard from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. The cost for the event, which includes lunch, is $40 for Chamber Members and $50 for nonmembers. Corporate tables of eight cost $350. Reservations must be made by Monday, September 13 at , or by calling (509) 624-1393.

Featured speakers will include Jaron Lanier, Senior Research Scientist, International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, and Visiting Scientist, SGI, and The Honorable Phillip J. Bond, Under Secretary of Commerce for Technology.

Jaron Lanier coined the term "Virtual Reality." He co-developed the first glove device for virtual world interaction and was the first to study full hand interactions with virtual objects. He also co-developed the first implementations of virtual reality applications in surgical simulation, vehicle interior prototyping, and immersive virtual reality products. Lanier serves as the Lead Scientist of the National Tele-immersion Initiative, a coalition of research universities studying advanced applications for Internet 2.

Phillip Bond serves as the principal advisor to Department of Commerce Secretary Don Evans on science and technology policy to help maximize technology's contribution to America's economic growth. Within the Department of Commerce, Bond's top priority has been to transform the Technology Administration into the pre-eminent portal between the federal government and the U.S. technology industry.
