06/30/2004 - TINCAN Sponsors Tech Camps

TINCAN (The Inland Northwest Community Access Network) is sponsoring a fun-filled summer of technology camps for teens. Campers will learn skills ranging from e-commerce to computer game development to putting theater on-line. Campers can learn to capture life in video, or start a business and learn how to put it on the Internet. One camp, being done jointly with WSU-Spokane's City Lab, has teens developing a biotech product and marketing it on-line. There will be six different sessions of day camps from June through August.

The camps were developed, in part, thanks to grants from the Department of Commerce, Technology Opportunities Program (TOP) and the Department of Education, Community Technology Center (CTC). Although both grants target "at risk" teenagers, the camps are not limited to that demographic.

The Camps and their dates in session include the following.

E-Commerce Executive in Training
Any teen who has ever wanted to strike it rich on-line should attend this camp. The camper will learn how to start a business and then learn how to put it on the Internet using TINCAN's Young Entrepreneurs' Center. No need to be a technology guru -- they'll teach you to do it. There will be three different sessions of this camp. Age requirement is 8th - 11th grade when school starts next fall.

Session 1: DATES/TIMES: June 28 - July 2; 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. LOCATION: WSU Spokane at the Riverpoint Campus.

Session 2: DATES/TIMES: July 26 - 30; 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. LOCATION: WSU Spokane at the Riverpoint Campus.

Session 3: DATES/TIMES: August 16 - 20; 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. LOCATION: Northeast Community Center

Build a Biotech Business
This camp requires as a prerequisite that the camper have prior experience in the City Lab Biotech camps or the equivalent. Campers will create a real biotechnology product and learn to market it. Half of the time will be spent in the biotech lab, and half of the time will be spent learning to market the product by putting it on-line.

DATES/TIMES: July 19 - 23, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. LOCATION: WSU-Spokane at the Riverpoint Campus.
AGES: 9th grade and up.

Taking Theater On-line
Campers will learn the basics of scripting and performance by working with theater professionals. Then they will use the Internet to showcase their talents in the Virtual On-line Teen Center.

DATES/TIMES: August 2 - 6; 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. LOCATION: Center Stage
AGES: 9th - 12th grade

Interactive Game Development
Campers will design strategies, create characters, and create a computer game using the same game engines as popular games.

DATES/TIMES: August 9 - 13; 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. LOCATION: WSU Spokane at the Riverpoint Campus.
AGES: 9th-12th grade

All camps cost $135/student and scholarships are available. For information about the camps, visit or e-mail or phone 744-0972.

TINCAN will soon be moving their offices into the Courtyard Office Center at 827 West First Ave, Suite 418. This move will accommodate their growing staff and programs. For more information about TINCAN, see
