06/30/2004 - EWU Showcase Celebrates 20 Year CS Masters Anniversary

The Eastern Washington University (EWU) Master's Degree in Computer Science (MS CS), which has been based in Spokane's Terabyte Triangle since its origin in 1984, will celebrate its 20-year anniversary at Gonzaga's Herak Hall (room 301), Tuesday July 13. The event will have a "Bastille Day Eve" theme - -- featuring non alcoholic champagne for toasting the MS CS programs accomplishments over the past two decades.

The event will feature Dr. Steve Simmons, a professor at EWU Computer Science, and founder of the Terabyte Triangle, who will give a brief presentation about the newly revised MS CS program. Dr. Simmons presentation will be followed by a sampler of current research in the MS in CS program, presented by Dr Atsushi Inoue, artificial intelligence specialist on the EWU computer science faculty, and director of EWU's Inland Northwest Security Systems Initiative (INSSI). According to Simmons, "the intellectual fireworks presented by Dr Inoue and several of his graduate students will probably top anything going on in France on Bastille Day Eve, this July 13."

With a true "vive La France" spirit, Simmons will toast the following accomplishments of the MS CS ---
*) The MS CS is now one of the most modern in the USA -- having been recently revised to replace a focus on single individual computers with a focus on complex, integrated digital systems --- including networks and cyber security.
*) The MS CS is the fastest-growing computer science degree program in the state of Washington --- and the recent recipient of major funding as a component of a $770,000 HEC Board grant to EWU this biennium.
*) The MS CS has been expanded with 2 tracks, so that it now accommodates both computer science graduates and information systems graduates.
*) The MS CS has just set a 20 year record for the upcoming year (2004/05) for the number of financially supported graduate positions --- including teaching and research assistants within the EWU computer science department.
The EWU research sampler will then feature the following brief talks, about hot topics like emotions for computer game characters, robots, and cyber attacks ---
*) Game AI: EmoBot (Tye Hooley, current MS CS grad student, Hogan Winner)
*) SVM and Cyber Security Applications (John Mill, MS CS Alum, SFCC faculty)
*) RoboCup (James McLaughlin / Wade Miller, current MS CS grad students)
*) The AI Program at EWU CS (Dr Atsushi Inoue, EWU CS AI specialist)
"Please join us for a hot time on Bastille Day Eve --- Tuesday July 13!" requests Simmons. The event will begin with a social period at 5:30 pm, with presentations at 6:00 until 7:00. For further information on the MS in CS please call Simmons at 358-2063 or e-mail, ssimmons@ewu.edu.
