04/30/2004 - SITSA Debut Features VPnet Progress

Just as the Internet is a network of networks, the region's brand new SITSA group is an organization of organizations. SITSA --- which stands for Spokane Information Technology SIG (Special Interest Group) Alliance --- will launch operations Tuesday May 11 at 5:30 pm in the SIRTI boardroom with a panel presentation on VPnet. The panel will include representatives of Avista Corporation, Network Design and Management (NDM), and Eastern Washington University (EWU).

Organizational members of SITSA include the Inland Northwest ACM (INACM) Chapter, Spokane Web Interest Group (SWIG), Java SIG, and Cyber Security SIG. According to Jack-Daniyel Strong, chair of SWIG, "The SIGs are working to combine our efforts in promoting and cross-promoting our talks and events. With SITSA, the SIGs will trade off presentations from month to month." So far the strategy seems to be working --- an impressively wide variety of presentations has been booked for the next few months. These programs include the group's debut presentation on VPnet, a June presentation by Strong on creating PDF documents using PHP, and a July panel presentation about current research at EWU's computer science department. All SITSA presentations will be at SIRTI, on the second Tuesday of each month, with networking at 5:30 pm followed by a SIG-sponsored talk from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Information on current and future talks can be found on SITSA's new Web site at sitsa.org.

The May 11 panel presentation "A Progress Report on VPnet" will feature
Steve Simmons, Professor of Computer Science, EWU
Butch Stokes, Engineering Services Manager, NDM
Dave Moore, Network Engineer, NDM
Steve Trabun, Project Consultant, Avista Corporation
Judy Cole, Director of Business and Public Affairs, Avista Corporation
Simmons will first present a brief overview and history of VPnet, which is a new multi-gigabit Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) donated by Avista and Columbia Fiber Solutions for regional educational collaboration and economic development. The heart of the panel discussion will be provided by Stokes and Moore of NDM, who will discuss the technical progress of VPnet, including fiber fusion status, segment architecture, sites lit up, and other aspects of progress in network infrastructure. Then, to address the issues of using the great power of the VPnet technology, Trabun will discuss the VPnet business plan and Cole the burgeoning group of applications developing now on university campuses and at local industry sites.
