11/30/2003 - Terabyte Triangle Featured in Planning Magazine

"The Terabyte Triangle in Spokane, Washington, sounds like a hot new high-tech company. But in fact the triangle is a district that merges technology with downtown redevelopment to promote smart growth."

This is the lead paragraph for the lead article, "Get Wired or Get Left Behind," that was published in the July 2003 issue of "Planning," the magazine of the American Planning Association. The article was written by Kathleen McMahon owner of Applied Communications in Great Falls, Montana, and Andrew Cahill, president of Design Nine, whose home office is in Blacksburg, Virginia. McMahon is current president of the Rural Telecommunications Congress and Cahill serves on the board of directors.

"Get Wired or Get Left Behind" is about the need for planned telecommunications infrastructure and having telecommunications as part of the comprehensive urban development plan. The article suggests both factors to include and pitfalls to avoid. Along with connectivity infrastructure, both fiber and wireless, the authors suggest the need for mixed use zoning, a variety of housing choices, rehabilitation of historic buildings, and keeping it all "user friendly."

Spokane is heavily featured as a positive example --- complete with Steam Plant Square color photos, and an interview with Kim Pearman-Gillmlan. Along with Spokane, the authors cite Boise, Idaho; Blacksburg, Virginia; Glenwood Springs, Colorado; and the Kentucky Housing Corporation.
