11/30/2003 - Remodeled Huppin's Goes Click & Mortar

Murray Huppin became the Inland Northwest's e-commerce pioneer with onecall.com --- a complete Hi-Fi, Photo, & Video store on line. Onecall.com quickly became known to the world of electronics buffs as the place they could purchase top-of-the-line and state-of-the art equipment at attractive prices. These are the people who purchase according to specifications after carefully researching a product. The rest of us like to look and feel, visually compare, and have someone explain it all in layman's terms. We need Huppin's newly remodeled downtown brick and mortar store.

Huppin's Hi-Fi, Photo and Video has a new "now" facade that makes it hard to believe they have been in business since 1908. Inside, they have expanded, but the store is still packed full. There is a zone for film and digital cameras and all manner of camera accessories. There is a room full of large screen televisions so the customer can evaluate. Around the store are zones with portable CD players, satellite radio for home and car, portable and small screen TV's, DVD players, and home theater packages. One larger room is fitted for speaker evaluation, and two rooms are devoted to home theater possibilities.

Spokane is one of very few test market sites for the MovieBeam set top box and service. Huppin's is a distributor for MovieBeam, which is a new digital movie distribution technology, piggy backing on broadcast TV signals. In signing up for MovieBeam, the customer signs up for the service, but MovieBeam Entertainment continues to own the box. A 12-month commitment is required, and the cost depends on whether the charge is paid as a lump or by the month. The annual equipment fee plus activation fee totals $99.89 before taxes. One hundred movies are stored on a hard drive within the set top box, and per movie viewing charges are $2.49 or $3.99 plus tax.

The brick and mortar Huppin's is at 421 West Main. With the remodeling, they promise that both Huppin's and OneCall.com will give the "best price, advice, service and selection available." The "new" Huppin's is a lively, energy-filled place, and yes, the service is both enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
