05/30/2003 - NetRiver Keeps on Flowing

NetRiver is best known for being the high-speed, broadband, and wireless service provider for the Davenport Hotel. Indeed NetRiver has a state of the art Network Operations Center (NOC) tucked safely away in a subbasement there. Their NOC has a dual OC12 fiber backbone on a sonnet ring with Cisco 6509 switching and battery and generator backup. NetRiver has a wireless POP for free unsecured wireless service throughout the hotel along with hardwired jacks in every booth and table in the restaurant and lounge. Located on the highest spire of the Davenport is another wireless access point used for more secure service to their private wireless customers. “We use a combination of WEP encryptions, coupled with Radius authentication, for our wireless customers,” says Ryan Maloney, NetRiver CEO.

NetRiver has just finished wiring the Electric Building in downtown Spokane. “We have expanded our Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) into the building, and Mayday and Corner Booth Productions are the first tenants to come on line,” says Maloney. The Electric Building also includes the Brooklyn Deli, Art by Yourself, Tryst Coffee and Juice Bar, among others. The MAN reaches to the Blue Chip Lofts. The plan is to extend high speed/broadband service into the lofts to make them “plug & go.” “We may put a wireless access point there --- a hot spot for public access,” Maloney continued.

NetRiver began business in Spokane in 1999. They provide Web hosting, e-commerce and dial-up service, but they also provide ISDN & DSL, broadband including T-1, T-3, fiber & Ethernet, wireless connectivity, co-location, and managed hosting. “We serve as a resale provider for Web developers,” say Maloney. “Companies like APerfectWeb use our servers for hosting their Web clients.” NetRiver uses mostly Microsoft servers, but they do have some Unix based servers and plan to add more utilizing Apache as the web service.

According to Maloney, NetRiver believes in quality customer service, and strives to give their customers their best. They have done well enough that they have branched into the Seattle market, and have opened a sales and service office there.
