05/30/2003 - Maplewood Move Expands Connections

Maplewood Software has a new address in the Holley Mason Building. They have new quarters in Suite 308, near the SCC - Information Technologies Academy. “We’re really in the Terabyte Triangle now,” says John Janzen, Maplewood President, “our connectivity in this space reaches 10 megs.” Higher speed connectivity is available on the third floor.

According to Nancy Janzen, CEO, Maplewood wants to be involved in the Spokane community --- and being close to and working with the IT students is one way to do that. Proximity to the academy helped make the recent Nerd-off programming contest possible.

Joining Maplewood in their new headquarters is long-time Web Developer Don Adair. Adair is forming a new company that will create front-end Web site design and architecture, and Maplewood will create the backend database and accomplish other task-oriented programming needs to make the Web sites functional. The two companies have done several projects together over the past year and sharing space is just another aspect of an ongoing partnership. Both companies believe this will be a solid partnership as well as an efficient use of space. Along with Adair, Maplewood has other ongoing partnerships. These partnerships include 180 Networks and JAH Consulting among others.

Along with much of the latter-day technology industry world wide, Maplewood has had some tough times. Some of their previous business partnerships were disappointing, especially their foray into ‘off the shelf - shrink wrapped products.’ “It’s made us focus on our core values and the things we do best,” says Nancy Janzen. “As John would explain it, we’re a lean mean programming machine,” she continues. The Maplewood team’s expertise includes ASP Development using JavaScript as a server side language, ASP.NET development with C#, and SQL Server 2000 development using new XML and XSLT standards. Maplewood works on Microsoft and Linux platforms utilizing JavaScript on ASP, C# on .NET, PHP on Apache, and Java on Tomcat

“We solve business problems,” says Janzen. Maplewood creates business software for the primary purpose of creating business efficiency. “Our software systems are sophisticated, efficient, and easy to use,” says Janzen. Maplewood understands “user friendly.” They are just finishing a job for Sacred Heart Medical Center that will make the job of scheduling much easier and more efficient.

According to Janzen, although it hasn’t always been easy, they are happy to be living and working in Spokane. Both Janzens are part of the ‘home coming’ committee for the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We ‘came home’ to Spokane, and we’re here to stay.”
