04/30/2003 - VPnet Opens for Action

VPnet is lit. “Thanks to the VPnet Technical Committee, the VPnet Workgroup, Avista Corp, Columbia Fiber and, in particular, to the work of Bonnie Glazier, Walt Seidel, and Larry Perkins, the first videoconference between SIRTI and Whitworth College was held on April 15,” announced Jack Miller, Director of Information Systems at Whitworth College. Miller adds, “From this point forward it is all about content.” The new VPnet link ran at 1 gigabit, with the videoconference transmission at 1.5 megabit --- the upper limit of the current video equipment.

Currently, only the SIRTI to Gonzaga to Whitworth portion of the VPnet is lit. The full gigabit speed is possible thanks to World Wide Packets equipment being used at the three locations. Other ‘link lightings’ planned, as soon as possible, include four links along the I-90 corridor, especially to the University of Idaho Research Park (URIP), and one link connecting the Moscow/Pullman area. These sites will be lit over the next several months, with the help of Cisco Systems, another community partner of VPnet. Lighting the remaining links requires the installation of a network core consisting of Cisco routers and switches, which will ‘glue’ the several links of VPnet together, and, in addition, allow VPnet to eventually connect to other networks, such as Internet2.

The first two official VPnet events have been scheduled. In early May, there will be a joint technology presentation between EWU and Whitworth. The transmission will originate at SIRTI. In early June, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) plans a chapter meeting transmission that will include SIRTI, EWU, WSU, Gonzaga, CCS, and Whitworth.

Beginning May 1, Access Grant applications from VPnet member organizations for the use of VPnet fiber will be accepted. To apply, contact Catherine Goodwin, VPnet Workgroup Chair, at SIRTI,

Billie Moreland
