11/30/-0001 - Columbia Fiber Wires Mead School District

Spokane's intelligent use of optical fiber continues to grow. Mead School District has selected Columbia Fiber Solutions to create their "Lit Fiber Wide Area Network (WAN) Services" network. This will be a gigabit Ethernet network between ten of the school district's buildings. The Mead School District, #354, is the second largest school district in Spokane County with approximately 8,500 students in two high schools, one alternative high school, two middle schools, and seven elementary schools.

According to Dan Butler, Directory of Technology, Planning and Budgets for the Mead School District, the wide area network will increase the network capacity between Mead's facilities and will allow the transfer of video, graphics, voice, and data. Video conferencing and high speed Internet will become available. The network will reduce overall communications costs and improve security and reliability of the school districts communications infrastructure. "In addition," says Butler, "we will be able to share and support numerous new bandwidth-intensive applications and take advantage of recent innovations." Mead Schools will be able to use the network for video on demand, VoIP (voice over Internet protocol), and distance education.

Columbia Fiber Solutions has been a key player in the development of VPnet (Virtual Possibilities Network). The existing reach of Columbia's fiber optic network will allow the Mead School District to implement its wide area network quickly. With their new network comes the possibility of Mead joining VPnet.

Since acquiring Avista Communications' fiber optic network in Spokane and Kootenai Counties in 2002, Columbia Fiber Solutions has extended its customer base to include the Inland Northwest's leaders in education, health care, financial services, telecommunication carriers, manufacturing, broadcasting, call centers, utilities, government, and gaming as well as many small businesses. With over 300 miles of fiber optic cable and 250 buildings already connected to its metropolitan fiber network, Columbia Fiber Solutions is the premier fiber optic solutions provider in Spokane, Liberty Lake, Coeur d 'Alene, Hayden and Post Falls.
